One area at home where you can make lots of greener swaps is in your cleaning cupboard and I’ve been working with SaveMoneyCutCarbon again to show you some of the brilliant items they have on their webshop. It can be really shocking when you learn about kitchen sponges not being biodegradable so sitting in landfills, then think about how many you have used over the years which is shocking enough but then multiply that by the population of the World and it’s overwhelming. Washing up brushes are plastic, cling film is terrible and the amount of trees that are used to make kitchen towel is devastating.

There are alternatives though, that will ensure that you still get your sparkly clean house but with less of the environmental impact. When you are a member of the SaveMoneyCutCarbon club (pay monthly) you get a club member’s exclusive discount so their guaranteed low prices on these products and so it needed be as expensive to make the swaps as you might think, especially when you consider that a lot of these products have a much longer life span than their plastic based alternatives.

First up, scrubby sponges, these were tested and found to have more germs than a toilet bowl (eew!) which has prompted people to change them more regularly, seriously increasing the environmental impact. Swap them for these compostable cloths and either a bamboo or stainless steel scrubber for those stubborn pots and pans.

Washing up brushes, plastic handles and nylon bristles can be exchanged for a wood and bamboo alternative like this one. You can also swap out cling film for sandwiches for beeswax wraps like these, or for storing food in in the fridge and freezer and microwaving, the Stasher bags mentioned in last months’ post are perfect.

The bottle brush from Ecococonut, another excellent eco friendly cleaning product alternative on the SaveMoneyCutCarbon website.

Something that I was really excited to try is the Ecococonut bottle brush, we have had reusable bottles for everyone in the family for years but it can be so hard to clean them properly as the kids sometimes abandon them in a bag or corner for so long they start going green and I don’t like using the regular washing up brush as it can sometimes be greasy or taint the plastic if there has been any tomato sauce etc and it doesn’t get into all the corners. It is naturally antibacterial. You can also use it on baby bottles.

The one I was most excited about and hadn’t come across before is bamboo kitchen towel! On a cardboard tube with tear off sheets, you tear them off, use them and then you can wash and reuse each of the 20 sheets up to 85 times. They’re really soft and after washing and drying, you can keep them in a container to reuse. Also pictured are the compostable caddy liners for your food waste bins. I find they can get so disgusting, especially on hot days and so a liner means its much easier to empty and keen clean.
